Dana was the president of the Rockingham County gem and mineral club for many, many years... He also went on field trips and mining with the club and taught them faceting and cabbing for years. The Iron Works road amethyst mine was know by many in the county for years. Several of the old timers got to mine it when it was in private hands. Dana was able to get several clean pieces from them as a favor for things he did for them. This one was sent to Sri Lanka to be cut along with a few other thousand carats of gem rough. Dana saved it for years but finally said he had enough and it was time to move it on. this gem was cut in Sri Lanka in 2001. The mine is closed to the public now and has been for over 15 years, Patsy and Jack Davis and Ed English knew the mine and also were involved with Dana in the club.
